THE NEIGHBORHOOD:
Founded around the year 1000, the old town of Sanremo is called La Pigna because of the distinctive layout of its streets and fortifications, which resemble the scales of a pine cone.
La Pigna was once the beating heart of a Sanremo that no longer exists. It is the true old town, now structurally more modest but still the most authentic and spontaneous area of the city.
Visiting Medieval Sanremo: La Pigna
La Pigna can only be visited on foot. The walk begins from Piazza Santo Stefano and climbs up to the Sanctuary of Madonna della Costa, the main religious building in the city.
La Pigna begins at the 14th-century Porta di Santo Stefano, a Gothic stone arch that separates the modern city from the ancient one.
Beyond the gate, at the end of the short street of the same name, you turn left into the characteristic Rivolte San Sebastiano, covered passages with steep and uneven steps that lead to Piazza dei Dolori. The square takes its name from the Confraternity of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, which takes care of the Oratory of San Sebastiano.
Route from Madonna della Costa to the magnificent Belvedere
Passing through the arch, you reach the Rive di San Giuseppe, which lead to the top of the hill, where La Pigna gives way to the unmistakable silhouette of the Sanctuary of Madonna della Costa.
This 17th-century building served for centuries as an important landmark for sailors approaching the city.
To return towards the sea, walk along the cobbled street in front of the sanctuary and descend to the Giardini Regina Elena. These gardens, named after the Queen of Montenegro who often stayed in the city of flowers, were created during the reconstruction that followed the 1887 Ligurian earthquake, which destroyed Bussana Vecchia.
From the belvedere you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city, the harbor and the Gulf of Sanremo.
A short staircase leads to Piazza San Costanzo, where the Oratory of San Costanzo stands, one of the oldest religious sites in the city.
